Christian Black Obituary, Death -Authorities are investigating the death of a 25-year-old Zanesville man, Christian Black, who reportedly inflicted injuries on himself and engaged in multiple altercations with jail staff before dying in a Dayton-area hospital.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Black passed away on March 26, three days after his arrest and detention at the Montgomery County Jail.
The incident began in the early morning hours of March 23 when Englewood Police responded to reports of a car crash on Interstate 70 near Hoke Road. The vehicle had been reported stolen following a violent robbery in Beavercreek. Black was taken into custody and charged with receiving stolen property and obstructing official business before being booked into jail.
The following morning, jail staff discovered Black lying face down and unresponsive in his cell. When medical personnel entered to check on him, he suddenly got up and began fighting with officers while attempting to move toward an exit.
In an effort to control him, staff used a Taser before returning him to his cell, where he was placed under observation. However, later that same day, Black reportedly began violently striking his head against his cell door multiple times.
When jail personnel intervened, Black resisted and fought back once again. Officers used pepper spray and a Taser before finally subduing him, placing him in handcuffs, and securing him in an emergency restraint chair to prevent further self-harm.
Black was given medical attention inside the jail, but his condition deteriorated, prompting staff to call for emergency responders from Dayton Fire. While awaiting the ambulance, Black went into cardiac arrest. Officers immediately removed his restraints and attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR, oxygen administration, medication, and the use of a defibrillator.
By the time paramedics arrived, Black had lost consciousness. He was rushed to a hospital in Dayton, where he remained under care until he was pronounced dead on March 26.
Given that force was used during multiple encounters with Black, the Dayton Police Department is leading the investigation into the events surrounding his death. Additionally, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Inspectional Service Unit will conduct an internal review.
The Montgomery County coroner has yet to determine Black’s official cause of death. Authorities have not provided further details on whether pre-existing medical conditions, injuries, or other factors contributed to the fatal outcome.
The case remains under investigation as officials work to piece together the circumstances leading to Black’s death.
